My Lasik Journey - Part 1 : Consultation Day

I got to know about lasik for the first time when my brother told the family that he wanted to do it. At that time, Prof Muhaya Eye's one was currently viral. Of course I wanted to do the same but looking at the price, I backed up. It was around 3 years ago and the cost was around RM7000, maybe.

This year, around 2 weeks ago, I was thinking about changing new spectacles;

This was actually because of my every year routine - to change spectacles. haha. I got used to the optical benefit from my previous company. Even when I resigned, my sister offered to use her optical benefit, so that's how I have the 'routine' of changing new spectacles every year.

So back to 2 weeks ago, this thought came to my mind, and I came to a realisation that it will be another waste to get a new spectacles. At the same time, I'm going to have around 1 month of holiday before starting my new job and I have a little bit of saving from current job at that time. So lasik came to my mind again. Money + lots of time, why not LASIK?

So, I search here and there (google) where can I do the lasik surgery. Cheaper one, cause I heard there is one place that offer just around RM3000 for both eyes. My sister used to share it on her Facebook, so I was looking for the infos and reviews on Advance Vision in Damansara Uptown. Everything was okay except for its quite far from my place. For lasik surgery, you need to go back and forth to the clinic for few times in a short period, so I prefer a clinic which is closer to my house.

While looking for the other clinic, I found out about USJ Eye Specialist. Nearer and less traffic. Price is almost the same. Less than RM3000. So I set an appointment for consultation first. My appointment was on last Saturday. There was a lot of people waiting and I could say, the waiting area was full. So, after filled in a form, one of the manager at the reception asked me to follow her for checkup.

She brought me to 3 different rooms with 3 different machines to check my eyes.

First room, the manager tested if I can see a few letters on the display while wearing my spectacles and another set of their own lenses which I need to hold near my eyes *I hope you can understand what I mean*

Second room, I need to take off my spectacles, she tested on my vision using the same machine that they used in optical shop.

Last room, again I need to take off my spectacles to a bigger machine. I'm not sure if I supposed to blink my eyes for this one or not but I just don't blink at all. When I was looking at the display, there was nothing but just red circle, the background is just black color. I didn't blink for like 5 seconds only (which feels like 50 minutes lol) but that machine really dries out my eyes! It hurts a little - cause you will feel like the machine took out all of the moisture that your eyes had. Haha. But once you're done with this machine, your eyes will becomes watery and it goes back to normal. Only for few seconds, so no worries.

Next, I waited for the manager to give explanation to me while she's checking the results from the last machine. After few minutes, she came to me and said that I am eligible to get the lasik surgery, Alhamdulillah! First step done. Then she explain in detail about my eyes conditions, generally.

There are 3 methods on how they can operate for lasik which you can refer here https://usjeye.com/lasik-visian-icl/ The consultant will tell you which method you are suitable with, as for me I can choose any - so I opt for LASIK which have the fastest recovery meanwhile, the other 2 methods will take longer recovery. But each of the methods have their own pros and cons. The price will be the same for any method.

Next, the manager explained to me the type of treatment area surgery (I don't exactly remember the terms) there are 3 to choose with different prices. I can't remember their names also haha - too much input I guess. Basically the bigger the treatment area, the lesser the expected glare and halo(click for details and explanation) after surgery. So, the first one which cost RM2980 will cover minimum area needed. The second one, bigger area will cost around RM4000+ and lastly the best option costs almost RM6000 - all this for both eyes.

She explained to me some risks and precautions during the surgery and what are do's and dont's. The consultation on that day was free since it's just basic checkup. She asked me whether I want to do a detailed checkup on that day or not - it will have some effect for a while depends on individual so I said I prefer to come with someone who can drive me home lol. For her, she said she can drive herself but just to be safe, I will go either with grab or my dad on the next time. Hewhew.

I will list down all the charges and how many times I need to go to clinic on the 3rd postyou may check it out there.

One more thing, during the detailed checkup they will confirm whether i'm truly eligible or not for the lasik surgery, and check whether I have any eyes problem, e.g: dry eyes, glaucoma and etc. Tomorrow will be my next appointment for detailed check up so I will update very soon.
